This week my wife Bonnie Balistreri was asked about “interview wear” advice. She should know as she has her hands full with me (I need lots of help from her!) and she is founder of Bonnie Balistreri Image Consulting. Thank you Bonnie……
Interview Wear Advice
When I work with clients who are utilizing Salvatore Balistreri Consulting Outplacement Services, some feel that if their resume looks great and say all the right things during an interview, they will most likely get the job offer.
Whether we like it or not, we are all judged by our appearance (especially during the job interview).
Here are a few helpful hints for preparing for the important job interview:
1. Look in the mirror and see how you stand or look. If you look tired it could be
the colors you are wearing. For example, a person with silver hair can look striking in a navy or black suit but can look tired in a light brown suit.
2. Do you look your age and does it match your skill-set? If you dress like a college
student applying for a management position they may not feel you would convey enough business maturity. On the other hand, if you dress outdated they may think you are perhaps not innovative enough with your ideas.
3. Is your clothing fitted properly? If you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, the
interviewer will feel your discomfort and it will take away from your message. Interviewers tend to be very intuitive about the people they are interviewing.
4. Before the interview, call the Human Resource Department (or your recruiter if
you are working with one) and ask how employees dress for that particular company culture. You may want to dress a half or full step up from the normal working culture to exhibit that you are unique and you are respecting the interview process.
The very best guideline to follow during an interview is to dress how you want to be perceived.
If you do that, you will be able to do your very best in every competitive interview process.
