Played tennis this morn with a much younger Man than me. In fact I am almost twice as old as this great family friend.

Recently he has been beating me in matches and although they have been close, I had to think about how to gain an edge this morning so I could be more competitive.

I told myself to commit to hitting the ball hard on each and every shot instead of hitting soft “junk” shots back to him and hustling like hec (like I usually do). I took the attitude that I will stay with this game plan and see the results later.

I played fairly well in the first set but later in the set I started to go back to my soft junk game as it kept me in my safe comfort zone. I lost 4-6.

In the 2nd set I told myself just COMMIT to hitting hard shots and don’t worry about the results. I stayed with this plan and won 7-5. We both decided that a 3rd set was not in the cards due to the searing Austin heat.

I learned something today that can be applied to business, family or sports: once you commit to a decision, you have to believe in the decision and believe in yourself.

Imagine that, still learning things after 59 years young!
