There was a recent business lesson related to the raucous 2016 Election (and let me be clear, I am not taking sides). To be effective in whatever you do, you have to show up and see people in person.

On November 14th, President Obama said about the recent election and disappointment for Democrats, “we have to compete everywhere. We have to show up everywhere. We have to compete on a grassroots level. I won Iowa not because the demographics predicted I would win Iowa and I spent 87 days going to every small town, fair, fish fry and VFW hall.”

show-up

I know that for my executive search firm pipeline of new business, my goal is to have at least 3 face to face meetings each week with executive decision makers. When you see people face to face, they are more inclined to decide that they want to work with you and they see your passion for what you do.

Whether working with internal or external clients in whatever career you have chosen, one of the lessons of this year’s election is that it pays to show up and see people face to face. Put away the phone, text, email if you can. Donald Trump outperformed his competitor in this area and knew this business lesson very well.
