I collect examples of true leadership.

This week, Darrell Royal died. He was 88 years old and was the former coach of the Texas Longhorns football team. His teams in the 60’s won three national championships.

Many Royal stories have been published and talked about this week. This is my favorite and a truly great example of leading quietly yet boldly.

Kirk Bohls, from the Austin American-Statesman, published this story this morning: “trailing 17-0 at halftime in College Station (Texas A&M), Royal simply writes “21-17″ on the chalkboard, then walked out of the locker room. Texas came back to win 21-17.”

This leadership lesson is obvious. Sometimes saying little is brilliant. Truly believing in and motivating your employees takes bold, innovative approaches and guts…..and belief in yourself as a leader.
