I agree. This is pretty much a self-serving title for a blog. However, I think there is a large grain of truth offered. Just keep reading. Please.
This week and out of the blue, I received an email from a recently placed candidate who started his General Manager position for an Austin area firm. He was starting his training in Austin for this new position and he asked me out for a cup of coffee to check in and thank me personally for placing him.
I thought that was very kind of him and we had our coffee this morning. He would not let me pay for my coffee. He was happy to be in his new job. He was so enthusiastic about working for his new boss. He could not be more grateful for the work my firm did in placing him. We also traded stories about both of us having Sicilian Mothers. It was a fun coffee.
I know. I am old school. But I really love this type of behavior from a candidate.
Why?
Being kind and grateful goes a long way with me. I will not forget this simple gesture and will more engaged with him in the future because of it. I will want to keep up with him over the years and help him in any way I can. I also think he will help me when I need it ie reaching out to him when I have a job opening and attempting to get candidate referrals from him. I feel we have the seeds of a long-term friendship now and not just a transaction with him passing through my life.
To me, success has to do with doing the little things right, consistently over time.
This newly placed GM has learned to crack the success code. He is on his way.
