Candidates are typically insecure about the interviewing process as the control rests with the executive search firm and the client who has the opening. Many candidates have also experienced a lack of communication in the past with recruiters they have worked with. To be successful with top candidates, be uncommon and unique with your communication flow.
What we recommend doing with a top candidate is to communicate in a way that you would keep a good friend updated. Keep the information flowing about the very next steps in the process so that the top candidate will be totally in the loop. They know they can count on you to tell them the truth and you can also articulate a clear path to winning the job.
I am a big believer in using texting to develop the relationship with a top candidate. Here are some real texts I have used in the past with top candidates so you can understand this level of communication:
- “Keep in mind that being strategic AND tactical are crucial in the final interview stage”
- “Client is down to two top candidates and you are one of them”
- “Call me right after your interview to discuss how it went”
- “Send me boss, peer, subordinate recent references; if goes well, you will get offer”
- “My gut tells me that if we get reference #3 done, client will make offer asap”
- “HR VP asked me to offer you the job to you. Call me please”
- “Written offer coming your way tonight”
Develop your relationship and fully communicate with the top candidate and give them the respect they deserve so that this increases your chances of landing the very best for your client. Treat them as you would a very good friend. In the process, you have just made a real friendship.
