As an executive search professional, I am often asked by candidates how to negotiate with a company that they just received a written offer from.
I always suggest to keep your ego in check during this time. Always stay very positive. Look at the areas of the offer that you really like and communicate that information to the company. Also suggest in the most basic and simple way any area or areas that you are not in agreement with. Always think “win-win” during this time and give the company the genuine impression that you are 90% there but for a few tweaks in the offer.
Here is an example of what the email response might look like:
“Good Afternoon ________
I am pleased with the written offer you have sent me.
First of all, the challenge and job fit are very exciting and I am looking forward to working for your organization. I also believe I will make a big impact in this position for years to come.
Second, the benefits offered with the position are extremely positive and I appreciate that your company is a market leader in this regard.
I quite honestly feel that I am 90% “there” with a positive decision to join your company. The only area of concern is the target bonus. I do believe that the base compensation offered is very fair. Would you consider increasing the target bonus from 15% to 25%? I am a true believer in being paid for outstanding performance.
If you are in agreement with this suggestion, I will set a start date of _____________ if that is good for you and your organization.
Please feel free to call me to discuss.
Looking forward to making this a positive decision and starting work soon for you.
Thank you.”
Staying very positive, keeping your ego in check and asking for something within reason will help you get what you want or at least get you close to what you want. Start with thoughtful positive statements and then identify your must have needs and you will negotiate a win-win offer for yourself.
